Bricks and Clicks Operations of Mark Spencer Retailer

Introduction The emerging technologies are transforming the people’s way of life in the current society. Business environment has been heavily affected by the new technological inventions. The world has been turned into a small global village. Transport and communication systems have highly improved from the beginning of the twenty-first century (Cook 2004, p. 68).Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Bricks and Clicks Operations of Mark Spencer Retailer specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Various sectors of business have been affected by these new inventions. One of the areas that have received heavy impact from the emerging technologies is marketing. Emerging technologies have redefined marketing in the current society. For a long time the marketing was considered as a unit within the production department. After the Second World War, the market became a huge one, but the number of firms was limited (Hew 2007, p. 92). This meant that there was limited competition in the market. The main issue that most of the multinational firms were concerned with was how to produce things in mass. The market would have to accept what was availed to them. This production strategy to marketing did not give much concern to the quality of products that were delivered to the market (Tuten 2008, p. 91). The market had to accept what was available. Some of the firms operated as monopolistic firms in the market. They had total control over the market, which made them dictate every activity within the industry. However, this has greatly changed in current society; nowadays it has different forces that require a highly skilled and dedicated workforce ensuring success. Competition has increased in the current market, making firm plans follow a strategy that would help them manage market competition successfully. Societal marketing is currently the only way to ensure that any firm operates within the market compet ition. Production is done using the outward-in approach (Montiel 2011, p. 57). Social media marketing is one of the most recent marketing techniques that are in use. This research seeks to study the brick and click markets. Analyzing and Comparing MS Bricks Clicks Operations Using the Wheel of Retailing Mark Spencer Retail is a large British retailer that has a global coverage. The headquarters of this firm is located in London. Two entrepreneurs, Thomas Spencer and Michael Marks, established this retailer in 1884. This firm has specialized in selling luxury food products and clothes (Hew 2007, p. 117).Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This firm has developed the art of selling the products in the brick form. It has various stores across the entire United Kingdom and other 42 other countries around the world. In the United Kingdom, this firm has over 700 stores. The firm h as opened 361 other stores in other parts of the world. It recently made an entry into the Chinese markets. This move was considered very attractive because this is the second most attractive market after the United States (Cook 2004, p. 72). The vast population in China makes it a very attractive market for any retailer operating a brick store. This market is also attractive for online operation because most of the city dwellers have internet connectivity in their houses. Visual merchandising is one of the oldest forms of trade. It later emerged as one of the theories of retailing in the modern society. According to Evans (2012, p. 67), visual merchandizing can be traced back to the old times when men practiced barter trade. A trader from China would bring his or her goods to the coastline where usually overseas traders would come. Because there was no common language that they could share, they relied heavily on the visuals. A trader would bring his goods to the market and wait fo r a potential buyer (Hew 2007, p. 67). The potential buyer would come with another commodity that would be desirable to the seller. The seller would look at the commodity brought in exchange for his product on sale and determine if the product brought in exchange for his or her product is worth the cost. The contract will be sealed if the two agree with the product of one another. When gold and silver were introduced as values of exchange, visual merchandising became even more advanced. A trader would take his or her product to the market. The buyer would come with gold or silver. The buyer would look at the products and determine whether the product is worth the price set. Such a customer would rely on the physical characteristics of the product that can be seen. The modern society advanced visual merchandizing and made it a theory having determined its impact on retailers. Mark Spencer have managed to use this strategy to increase the sale of its products in both brick and click markets (Burrow 2009, p. 75).Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Bricks and Clicks Operations of Mark Spencer Retailer specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The introduction of glass windows where customers can view products while walking along the streets was due to this theory. In the click market, this firm has most of its products displayed attractively in their website. There was a need to ensure that customers could view products on display so that they would be motivated to buy the products (Saxena 2009, p. 35). This theory became very popular because marketers concluded that the most attractive shoppers were the impulse buyers who buy many products when they see them attractively displayed in stores, even if they have not planned to buy them before. Visual merchandising is also used at the food stores of this firm (Hew 2007, p. 59). The firm displays various food products they sell strategically so that custom ers could view them when they visit the store. In their website, the firm has displayed some of the most popular delicacies that have already been prepared. In the fast food industry, this strategy is taking a new twist. Besides displaying the products in transparent showcases where customers can easily view them, preparation of the food is currently being done in front of the customers so they could see the process themselves. To the online customers, the slides include preparation procedures. Customers want to see how their meals are prepared, and retailers have no choice but to ensure that this is done. The Wheel of Retailing Theory This theory will help demonstrate the growth of this firm in both brick and click market. In the first quadrant, a product is new in the market (Sandhusen 2008, p. 45). At the first stage in quadrant 1, the products of MS were relatively low price with low margins and low reputation. As it experienced growth, it moved to the second quadrant where its prices, margins, and reputation surged (Pelle 2007, p. 82). The third quadrant has even better prices, margins, and reputation. The forth quadrant explains the stages a new firm will have to undergo before reaching full maturity at quadrant three. Wheel of RetailingAdvertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Brick marketing strategy is still very popular around the world. It is the most popular retailing strategy in the developing economies where people do not have strong trust in the online products. On the other hand, the click market is gaining popularity very fast, especially in the developed countries. When purchasing such goods such as an expensive car, for example, consumers rely on brick stores where they can test the product before taking it away from the store (Hew 2007, p. 48). On the other hand, such products as books, clothing and electronics can be purchased though online means. This is the reason why Mark Spencer continued to open numerous other stores in various locations around the world, while expanding its click market. By the beginning of the year 2012, this firm had approximately 81,230 employees spread across the world in its various stores to manage both brick and click markets demands (Saxena 2009, p. 131). The firm had a profit of about 599 million pounds for the previous 2011 year, from its brick and click markets. Analyzing and Comparing MS Bricks Clicks Operations Using the Retail Marketing Mix The emerging technologies have changed the way marketing is conducted in the current society (Hew 2007, p. 23). The emerging technologies are bringing new ideas of how to conduct business in a relaxed environment. Internet marketing, or what others call web atmospherics is becoming very popular among the retailers, just as the brick market. Mark Spencer have come to realize this, and are making every move to ensure that it operates within the demands of the new technology. Customers in the current society value time. Most of the middle-class individuals are so concerned with advancing their careers. They want to ensure that they achieve maximally within their various professions (Saxena 2009, p. 112). The little spare time they have is always used in advancing their education. This leaves them with very limited time to take care of the issue of shopping. They can no longer afford the luxury of spending their time walking from one store to another along the city streets. For this reason, marketers have come up with a solution that would help capture this new requirement of the modern society. Competitive Strategy The world is very competitive. This means that firms are forced to find a way of making their products appealing to the marker. Most of the firms that are emerging in the current market are coming up with products that are already available in the market (Sandhusen 2008, p. 136). Their presence in the market causes saturation in the products they offer, making customers very choosy. In the current market, customers are very demanding. Firms are constantly under pressure to perform exceedingly well in order to manage the competition in the market (Hew 2007, p. 81). Firms face a lot of pressure from the suppliers. The supply is constantly on the rise. This firm has no otherwise but to pay the increased price of pr oducts. The cost of maintenance is also high. This increases the cost of delivering products to the customer. The firm will also need to improve on the quality of the products in order to ensure that they outmuscle other competitors. When the product is delivered to the customers, the customer will demand reduced prices simply because they have other alternatives. This would force the firm to find a way of generating profits in such a harsh environment. Mark Spenser have come to realize that it has to develop means through which it can develop promotional campaigns for its products in the global market. It has developed a brand in the local market, and the entire global market. The region appreciates the fact that this company offers the best travel services in the region (Pelle 2007, p. 95). However, there is a very strong competition from other regional firms, which are posing threat to this firm. It forces the firm to come up with strategies which can enable it attract the custom ers in the region. Regionally, this firm has positioned itself as a company that takes care of the interest of the customers. One of the leading concerns of most customers is to get quality value for their money (Cook 2004, p. 28). This market proposition has seen it win trust of the local market. This firm has also made concerted effort to attract travelers of other nations. In order to reach out for the customers, this firm has tried to use both the social media and mass media to communicate their message to the customers. Locally, the firm has actively engaged in promotional campaigns in the mass media. It has developed television commercials that help it reach the local market. The social media has been very vital in reaching out for the international community (Hew 2007, p. 112). The YouTube has helped this firm in airing its television commercials to the international community. The Facebook and Twitter have also been very vital in communicating to the customers in the interna tional market. Factors and Strategies Considered This firm uses various competitive strategies in the market in order to manage competition that is very rife in this industry. First, the firm has employed two of the porter’s competitive strategy of low cost and differentiation. The management of Mark Spencer has made concerted effort to ensure that the cost of delivering its services is kept at the lowest possible rates. This is the main factor that has helped the firm increase its profitability (Pelle 2007, p. 87). Another factor that the management has been keen on is the need to differentiate its products from others in the market. The timing tactic of this firm in launching new products has also been superb. This firm always come with a new product at such times that the market feels that they need a better product to serve their current needs. This has seen their products receive huge acceptance in various markets when introduced (Burrow 2009, p. 26). The firm has also been keen to employ cooperation strategy whenever needed. This firm has resolved to form alliance with various suppliers in order to increase its efficiency. This strategic alliance saw it gain market share both in the home markets and abroad. Team Learning The wheel of retailing gives the best explanation of how a firm can manage both brick and click markets. The dynamics in the environment are changing the conventional approach of this theory (Sandhusen 2008, p. 36). It is no longer enough to display products for customers to see them at the stores, or in the website. The current society requires an individual marketer to ensure that he or she understands the market dynamics. For this reason, there is a need for the continuous learning. It is, therefore, very desirable to work as a team, to ensure that all the players within the firm or industry in general, understand the new concepts in the market. This will involve sharing of knowledge; any marketing information that is relevant should flow smoothly amongst the members of the team (Hew 2007, p. 62). Through this, it becomes easy for a member to learn the new dynamics that is relevant to their operations in the industry. Conclusion The society is undergoing various changes in the environment brought about by the emerged technologies. Brick and click operations are still popular in retailing sphere. Click operations are gaining popularity at a very faster rate since customers have limited time in order to shop around in various shopping malls (Burrow 2009, p. 83). They rely on the internet to get various products available in the market. Mark Spencer stores have realized this fact and have adjusted their operations to suit the emerging trends in the market, which has helped the firm remain relevant and stable in the market. Recommendations This firm has also been able to implement Porters five forces. To tackle the threat of new competition, the firm has extended the line of existing products to counter the competition of new entrants. To manage the threat of substitute products, the firm has come up with new line of product (Burrow 2009, p. 34). To increase its bargaining power with the consumers, it has continued to produce high end services with qualities that make it easy for the customers to appreciate their high prices. To increase their bargaining power with the suppliers, it has created a scenario where it is a single buyer with various sellers. This makes it able to dictate the terms of buying the products. To counter the intensity of competition, it has been able to acquire a special niche in this market, rendering its competitors irrelevant as their products are turned into mere substitutes of this company’s products. Alternative Energy Research Paper

Alternative Energy Research Paper Free Online Research Papers The worlds sources of fossil fuels are drying up faster than the earth can renew them. Fossil fuels, like coal and oil take the earth thousands of years to reproduce so an effective alternate energy source must be explored. For many years we have been running out of oil. This phenomenon is called the Hubbert peak theory also known as peak oil. Hydrogen is a great option to power an engine. To make hydrogen we can decomposition methane or using electrolysis. There are two methods: combustion, and fuel cell conversion. Nuclear power is also an option to powering a vehicle. As we all know we have to use uranium to produce nuclear power. Biofuel is a fuel that comes from biomass, living organisms, like cow manure. This area is very active, because it can convert biofuels and other fuels into fuel cells (Biofuels) Alternative Energies The worlds sources of fossil fuels are drying up faster than the earth can renew them. Fossil fuels, like coal and oil take the earth thousands of years to reproduce so an effective alternate energy source must be explored. Fossil fuels or crude oil has been around for a long time and can be refined to form a number of products. Such products include gas, naptha, gasoline, kerosene, gas oil or diesel, and other things. This form of an energy source is used in many things such as generators, electricity, automobiles, aircraft, watercraft, and many other things. While this is a very strong and versatile energy source it still is an excellent energy source. We are also running out of crude oil, a non-renewable resource. For many years we have been running out of oil. This phenomenon is called the Hubbert peak theory also known as peak oil. The peak oil theory states that every finite resource has a beginning, middle, and an end of production. Production of oil usually follows a bell shape curve when graphed. When oil production reaches the mid-point of its life it also reaches the peak oil production. This theory was developed by the geologist for Shell oil, named M. King Hubbert. In the 1960s Hubbert predicted oil would peak 40 years from then, putting peak oil production right about now. Since oil is running out we have to start thinking about alternative fuels that are available to us. The problem is not whether these alternative energy sources exist or nor, they do. Should the government fund and give large tax breaks to research into alternative energy sources. Alternative fuel is any other method of powering an engine without using petroleum. Some of these alternative fuels and methods of powering an engine or the economy are: coal, hydrogen, nuclear power, biofuels, Athabasca Oil Sands in Canada, Venezuelan Orinoco tar sands, green alternatives, and Thermal Depolymerization. These are just few of other methods. The majority of these alternative fuels are arranged to be cheap, non-polluting, and infinite sources of energy. (Hubbert Peak Theory) Coal is a fossil fuel dug up from the Earth by deep mining. Coal is an extremely important source that produces electricity worldwide. In the United States coal produce over half the electricity consumed by the nation. Coal can be produced into oil by gasification and liquefaction (Coal). This process is called synthetic oil from coal (Life After the Oil Crash). This is a good process because it does not contaminate the environment. However, coal is not as great as it seems. Coal production will peak approximately 2 decades. If demand remains frozen at the current rate of consumption, the coal reserves will indeed last roughly 250 yearspopulation growth alone produces the lifetime to some 90-120 yearsthe use of coal for conversion to other fuels reduces the lifetime of coal to less than a human lifespan (Life After the Oil Crash). Hydrogen is a great option to power an engine. To make hydrogen we can decomposition methane or using electrolysis. There are two methods: combustion, and fuel cell conversion. In combustion, hydrogen is burned like in traditional gasoline cars. The combustion cars burn hydrogen directly, and produce water vapor, which is non-polluting. In fuel cell conversion, hydrogen is turned into electricity through fuel cell, which powers the engine (Hydrogen vehicle). Fuel cell conversion is highly efficient. However, there are problems with this method. The problem with combustion is that hydrogen fuel is used rapidly. The first problem fuel cell conversion has is that hydrogen has a low density. Meaning that the amount that can be stored is limited (Hydrogen vehicle). The second problem is the expensive cost of making a reliable fuel cell that would provide electric power in a hydrogen car. Fuel cell designs require the use of platinum, and platinum will become scarce soon (Life After the Oil Crash). The third problem is that hydrogen is an energy carrier, meaning that it does not produce energy. It has to be produced by fossil fuels (Hydrogen vehicle). The electrolysis process consumes more energy than it produces. Nuclear power is also an option to powering a vehicle. As we all know we have to use uranium to produce nuclear power. At the rate we are consuming gasoline, there are 50 years left of low cost uranium (Life After the Oil Crash). There are reactors that create inefficient nuclear fuel, which leads to nuclear waste. However, there are more efficient reactors that reduce the amount of nuclear waste. If we use these types of reactors we are still going to have 10,000 to 5 billion years of uranium for use in these power plants (Nuclear Power). However, nuclear power is less convenient than what they state. It is dangerous to put a nuclear reactor in your trunk (Life After the Oil Crash). It is also a problem because we do not have the time or the money to build 10,000 power plants to produce the energy we get from fossil fuels (Life After the Oil Crash). It will take $3-5 billion per plant, without including the cost to repair old reactors, and converting nuclear energy appropriate for cars, boats, and airplanes. It takes 10 years to build one of these nuclear power plants (Nuclear Power). Biofuel is a fuel that comes from biomass, living organisms, like cow manure. This area is very active, because it can convert biofuels and other fuels into fuel cells (Biofuels). Bioenergy develops 15% of the worlds energy use. Biomass can also be used for the making of electricity and heating. There are solid biomasses that can be made into fuel, like: wood, straw, animal waste, husks or shells from crops, and bagasse (Alternative Fuel). There are also liquid biomasses that can be used as fuel: bioalcohols, like ethanol, methanol, and butanol; biological produced oils like, straight vegetable oil, waste vegetable oil, and biodiesel; oil and gases can be produces by methane, and thermal depolymerization. Gaseous biomasses can produce fuel, like: bio-methane, wood gas, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide (Biofuels). However, biofuels has become less efficient than oil. It consumes more energy than it produces. It takes 11 acres to grow enough corn to fuel one automobilefor 10,000 miles, or about a years drivingthe amount to feed seven people for the same period of time Life After the Oil Crash). To replace a small part of our oil supply we would have to turn most of Africa into a giant biofuel farm. Its a great idea, and we can develop it further, but it wont be enough to the rate we consume oil (Biofuels). The Athabasca Oil Sands are large deposits of tar sands that are located northwestern of Canada and Venezuela Orinoco. It is said that Athabasca contains two thirds of total global oil deposits (Alternative Fuel). It contains 1.6 trillion barrels of oil. With the technology we have today only 311 billion barrels could be extracted (Athabasca Oil Sands). Then why not get most of our oil supply from the Athabasca Oil sands? According to the Department of Energy it will only lower oil prices less than fifty cents. It will also take 10 years to come online. It will peak at 875,000 barrels per day, but not until 2025. By then we would need 35 million barrels per day, while the world needs 120 million barrels per day (Life After the Oil Crash). Green alternatives like, solar, wind, wave, and geothermal power are fine ways to power the nation, better yet the world. Geothermal energy comes from radioactive decay from the core of the Earth. Which heats the Earth inside out, and the sun heats the surface. There are three ways to produce geothermal energy: geothermal electricity, geothermal heating through deep Earth pipes, and geothermal heating through a heat pump (Geothermal Power). The most renewable energy is solar energy, energy coming directly from sunlight. Solar power can be made by: generating electricity using solar cells, generating electricity using thermal power plants, generating electricity using solar towers, heat buildings, heat buildings through heat pumps, and heat foodstuffs through solar ovens (Solar Energy). When the sun heats up the earth unevenly, it creates winds. Wind is able to run wind turbines capable of producing electricity. Some areas do not have prevailing wind power so its best to put them offs hore or at high altitudes, the wind is more continuous. Waterpower can be harnessed and used (Wind Energy). Like water is a thousand times heavier than air, even a slow stream of water can produce large amounts of energy. There are many forms of waterpower: hydroelectric energy, tidal power, tidal stream power, wave power, ocean thermal energy conversion, and deep lake water-cooling (Water Power). However, green alternative is not a good idea. The green alternatives have limited capacity, compared to fossil fuels. Californias 13,000 wind turbines generate as much electricity like a single 555-megawatt natural gas fired power plant (Life After the Oil Crash). To replace a drilling platform that pumps 12,000 barrels of oil per day we would have to build 706 wind turbines (Wind Energy). The combined output of all solar cells in the world is less than 40% of the output of a single coal power plant. The amount of energy distributed by one gas station in one day is equal to the amount of energy that four Manhattan size city blocks of solar equipment produces. To power the whole Earth with solar panels it will take 220,000 square kilometers (Solar Energy). These options only produce energy at certain times or conditions of the day. In order to power a small portion of Earth we would need trillions of dollars to build hydrogen-powered cars, trucks, boats, and air plains; need thousand s of dollars to build oil-powered factories; build an expensive refueling and maintenance network; and we would need huge amounts of platinum, silver, and copper (Life After the Oil Crash). All of these alternative energies and fuels cannot compare to the efficiency oil produces for us. These alternatives were too expensive, there was not enough time, and more energy was put in to produce than it produced, or it was an underdeveloped idea. All of the alternative energies need a little bit of maturity to produce something as proficient as oil. Recently many countries have become increasingly interested in indigenous, renewable energy sources, such as tidal energy as an alternate to fossil fuels for the production of electricity. Tidal energy is a huge source of renewable energy and holds great potential for future electricity generation. Tidal power is predictable, unlike solar power or wind energy. Though, even using modern day technological advances the amount of energy generated will still not totally cover and resolve the worlds energy supply problems. Alternative energy is an option that needs to be put into play. It is proven wind generators have a very mild, hardly if any effect on the environment. If anything a bird might fly into the propellers or a cluster of wind generators might somehow generate a magnetic field disrupting migratory birds route during migration season. Another problem would be lack of wind. Imagine if we relied mostly or entirely on wind power, if we had no wind going things would be thrown int o chaos and confusion, people would be helpless in some places, looting would be abundant and many other problems would be occurring. The curiosity of mankind has led to the discovery of various types of energy, the most essential being nuclear energy. It has become such a necessity over the years that humans cannot survive without it. Nuclear energy provides us with relatively cheap electricity, it helps expand the making of drugs and the equipment in the medical field, and the most vital of all, nuclear weapons. When Einstein and Hahn first began exploring this fascinating kind of energy, their intentions were not to use it as weapons of mass destruction. Unfortunately, that is what humans have made of them. Nuclear Weapons are a threat to the world; they are harmful to the environment and its inhabitants, they are indestructible and they cause competition between nations. Nuclear power has been around since the early 1950s. It is clean with the exception of producing of radioactive waste which has to be stored somewhere, plus there is a risk nuclear meltdown. It is still extremely efficient, for example a golf ball sized lump of uranium can fuel a nuclear powered submarine for 13,700 leagues or 66144 kilometres. Uranium-238 has a half-life of 4.5 billion years and makes up 99 percent of the total amount of uranium on the earth. I cant explain the process of nuclear reactors in one small paragraph so Ill just say that heat from the uranium is used heat water, create steam, and that steam spins turbines. So what do you think about coastal wind farms? Are you all for them, unsure, or completely against them? Well these wind turbines have caused a real uproar and this project of coastal wind farms havent adapted to the public as the government thought they would. Its now staring to look as though its been more trouble than what its worth. The Victorian government has designed on installing 2000 megawatts of energy production by 2010, which is the equivalent of 1200 to 1500 wind turbines. There are at present 27 operating wind turbines in Victoria, 14 at Codrington near Warrnambool, 1 on the Bellarine Peninsula, and 12 at Toora here, in South Gippsland. Each turbine stands between 100-130 metres tall, the equivalent of a 35-40-storey building, and the next generation is said to be even bigger. This sounds good, positive, its clean and renewable energy, pollution free, but it was where the turbines were to be placed that outraged the public. They were to be placed overlooking some of our most pressured landscapes on our coasts, like Wilsons Promontory, The Great Ocean Road at Nirranda, The Bay of Islands, Discovery Bay, Cape Bridgewater, Logans Beach, Corner Inlet, Bald Hills, and Kilcunda Coastal wind farm projects have become a problem as they have already, and will continue to have a devastating visual impact on our beautiful coasts, ruining the natural landscapes that values Australias Coastline. The sight of our coastlines has been obscured by these giants and is said to be industrialising our coast, which is hypocritical. As much as the coastal communities are fighting for their coast to stay the way it is, the government doesnt seem to be listening. This is only one disadvantage of these coastal wind farms, as there are many difficulties that have contributed to these projects. Another complaint is that wind farm developments could actually wipe millions of dollars from Victorias coastal property market, which has already occurred of up 30%. Landowners within 2 kilometres of Toora Wind farms have struggled desperately to sell their properties, and those who found buyers had to sell well below the market price. This price is also expected to drop even further if more wind farm developments near the coast start to take off like the expected wind farms near Cape Liptrap, which is said to have devastating effects on land values and its scenery. The noise factor is another problem, which has been an issue after some of these developments. People have been forced to abandon their dream homes from the coasts because of the tremendous noise of these wind farms. Mr. Stephen Garito, who said he had to leave his peaceful country lifestyle because of the low frequency, humming noise that is generated by the blades as they pass the towers and high speeds, which he said, created a similar effect to nightclub music. It was like a disco beat coming from a few blocks away rising and falling all day and all night. Even with all the windows and blinds shut, it still didnt stop the irritating noise, making them unable to sleep at night. The glare from the rotating blades was also a major turnoff for prospective buyers, and they complained as the flicker was worse than noise and drove you crazy. There was also the cost issue of establishing a wind farm development as each turbine would cost approximately $2.8 million (Australian) to be inst alled, therefore a 40-turbine wind farm would cost around $122 million. That was the bad side of this situation, and believe it or not there is also a good positive side and some advantages to be had with these wind farm developments starting with electricity. A modern 1.75 MW will produce approximately 5 million kilowatt hours of generation per year, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 900-1000 Victorian households. Wind farm energy is also a renewable resource of clean pollution free energy. Electrical energy is essential to billions of people around the world as we rely on it for the simplest things like light to read and water for the shower, but the conventional sources of power come from burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas, oil, or from nuclear fuels. Apart from the fear of fossil fuel shortages, they are destroying our planet and changing the climate, which has warmed by about 0.7 degrees Celsius in the last 300 years and about 0.5 degrees Celsius of that warming occurring in the last 100 years, which is a great concern . This change is due to the increase in the emissions of greenhouse gases, which these burning fossil fuels have created and scientific models predict that the average global temperature will rise by a further 3 degrees Celsius by the next century, unless change takes place now. With the global temperatures changing, this is also leading to the ice caps in the artic and Antarctic waters already melting, which is leading to sea level rises. The result of this on human and natural environments could be devastating as rising sea levels could submerge whole islands, flood low lying areas in many countries and without doubt push entire species to extinction. An alternative generation of clean energy source like wind farms are a growing importance and a global priority for future generations, as a modern 1.75 MW wind turbine would annually displace approximately 7,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from other electricity sources. There is also the fact that jobs will be created through wind farm developments including coastal wind farm developments of about 30-50 local jobs during construction, and atleast 5 permanent jobs for operation and maintenance. As the supply of wind farm energy is greater then electrical energy, and depending on the normal economic theory, electrical prices will drop and the power quality should increase. The best advantage of coastal wind farms apart from the general advantages above is that wind turbines can actually be placed on concrete pillars in the water off the shore. So unlike wind farms inland, which still leaves more than 97% of the land its situated on for farming and grazing, these coastal wind farms wont ruin views and sceneries as they will hardly be seen. At Port Phillip, Western Port and Corio bays, 300 wind turbines are planned to be erected across these bays by the Nepean Wind Energy Company. The 140 metre high, 54 metre long bladed turbines are said to be built in water depths of up to 25 metres outside shipping lanes and away from areas with significant bird population. The facility could produce almost half of the State Governments target for wind energy in a single project, and the company claims the project will result in a reduction in the states output of greenhouse gases by 1.8 million tonnes and provide enough power for 260,000 homes. These wind farms will also allow energy users in Melbourne and Geelong to contribute to producing pollution free energy and it is said that A project of this scale has the potential to give Melbourne an iconic and sustainable feature. Summary of research article Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Summary of research article - Essay Example There is dire need to investigate the widespread and misleading conceptions regarding the adolescent life. Talai has carried out a research along with Kelvin Barclay and Kathleen Foley at the Park Royal School and the Royal Haven School in Quebec. The research was meant to study the nature and significance of friendship in the life of an adolescent as it is in the Western culture. Amit-Talai has emphasized that the friendship’s nature in the life of an adolescent reflects in his/her friendship as an adult, which adds to its value. Amit-Talai asserts that various social and psychological factors that exist in the life of an adolescent influence the nature of friendship he/she enters into. It is quite common for the students to encounter a lot of changes when they are in the phase of secondary school. The onset of puberty inculcates drastic changes in the nature and attitude of both genders, on the physiological part. On the sociological part, adolescents assume much more respon sibilities in school and home and also, in the workplace occasionally. The adolescents also experience a shift in their relationships with their peers when they enter their puberty and gain the sense of sexuality. A vast majority of students feel a change in their learning tendency and the environment as well. Many families change their residence as the children move from childhood to adolescence. The change of location causes the adolescents to change their schools. However, it must be noted that the physiological and sociological changes brought about by the adolescence are not the only factors that play a decisive role in determining the structure of an adolescent friendship. After conducting the research, Amit-Talai found that the rules in both the Quebec secondary schools that were involved in the study were too strict to allow the students time to socialize in an informal manner in their private lives. Such a lack of time to promote intimate informal relationships in the life of an adolescent significantly declines his/her tendency to maintain a healthy friendship, though the lack of time does not completely eradicate the friendship at all. According to Paine (cited in Amit-Talai 235), friendship is a â€Å"dyadic, confidential and personal relationship†. There is a category of friends called as â€Å"just friends† that are indeed, the â€Å"â€Å"purest† form of friendships, voluntary and operating outside of any specific context, with no structural or cultural supports†. (Fischer 108 cited in Amit-Talai 235). However, the secondary students studied by Amit-Talai in her research express a blurred relationship of friendship in the sociological context. It is commonly thought of adolescents that their life is full of leisure as compared to that of the adults. Amit-Talai says that there is no doubt in the fact that many adolescents do not work and only study, yet the school and related activities like homework consume a major po rtion of their time. â€Å"Adolescents who are not at work do not necessarily have more â€Å"free time† as a result† (Amit-Talai 237). Amit-Talai has also noticed a manifold increase in the number of working students in the secondary schools in Quebec since early 1975. In order to entertain their social concerns, many secondary school students work along with their studies. Such social concerns include but are not limited to shopping, outing

The Use Of Recycled Plastics As Structural Elements In Construction Essay

The Use Of Recycled Plastics As Structural Elements In Construction - Essay Example First the lumber is stated to be molded in one specified size and UV additives are utilized for prevention against deterioration due to UV light exposure. Structural plastic lumber does not experience such as rotting, cracking, splintering or splitting for at least fifty years and is additionally reported to be of the nature that resists such as termites, salt spray, fungus and marine borers. Formation of the plastic and fiberglass mixture involves heating and continuous extrusion and then the substance is formed into the shape that is needed followed by cooling and cutting. An outer layer that is high-density and solid results from the continuous extrusion process and produces as well a cellular inner core that is less dense and which is wanted and needed for adding to the strength and weight of the material. (American Recycled Plastic, Inc, 2006, paraphrased) It was reported by BBC News that a company is building homes made from 18 tonnes of recycled waste plastic. Specifically, Affresol of Swansea is reported to have developed a technology that is useful in building houses that are low carbon from plastics and minerals. It is reported that that Welsh Assembly Government money is backing the firm which has â€Å"launched a range of eco-friendly homes and four-tonne modular portable buildings.† (BBC News, ) The new sustainable process is reported to have great potential for the construction industry and most specifically for promoting ‘green jobs’. A new material has been developed that has been called ‘Thermo-Poly Rock (TPR) which is made from plastics and minerals that have been recycled for the specific use as a structural building product. It is reported that the TPR panels are bolted together to produce the â€Å"load bearing frame of the house which can be externally clad with brick, block or stone, with the interior insulated and plastered as any other house.† (BBC News, 2010) The roof was

Objectives Of The Masala Restaurant Commerce Essay

Objectives Of The Masala Restaurant Commerce Essay Masala restaurant is situated at mission bay, Auckland. There are totally 8 branches of the restaurant all over New Zealand and plans are in the pipeline to open more. The place is becoming popular as it provides cheap and good quality food apart from the large menu. The restaurant and its other branches are solely owned by Mrs. Jyoti Jain. It caters to wide number of people and of various cultures. I had an interview from Jaspreet jassi who is the manager of masala restaurant, mission bay. Hence the menu contains food from various countries but the speciality of the restaurant is mainly Indian. To capture the market and have a diverse group of customers some of the spicy Indian foods are made light and sometimes sweet to cater to the New Zealanders. The service towards the customers too is very professional. Objectives of the restaurant 1. The main objective of the restaurant is to provide a wide range of food at reasonable prices. 2. Within 3 years the restaurant became popular in Auckland and few other places, so they would like to expand and have more branches in other places in New Zealand. 3. Their current strategy is to have 25 branches in whole of New Zealand by the year 2015. 4. They would like to be an active and vocal member of the community and participate in various community activities. 5. To help in financial contribution through continual re-investment. Finding and Analysis Organization Structure and communication channels Masala restaurant is one of the leading Indian restaurants in New Zealand. Earlier it was a small food joint with limited Indian food catering only to the Indian community in Auckland. Later the owner realized that there were many people apart from Indians who also liked the Indian food but opted for little less spicy food. So the management decided to make their foods at three levels of spiciness, less, medium and hot. Through feedback from regular customers, they realized that they needed to increase the varieties on the menu. Then they added many new dishes and each time a new dish was tried out the customers feedback was taken into account and further decisions were made based on this. The employees understand their role and responsibilities towards the company. There are opportunities for both top-down bottom-up communication as it is necessary for the restaurant use both ways for communication. Bottom-up is moves as per the system and used in several area like: Motivation teams, mounting knowledge opportunities, replicating human development, increasing communication, improve confidence. A business needs to develop a strategy that is a balance of both the top-down and bottom-up in order to be effective. The top-down approach includes leadership development, equal employment and zero tolerance policies, training, recruitment and retention programmes, social responsibility initiatives, linking diversity to business goals and cultural-change initiatives. This approach is required for top level leaders in order to visualize and articulate the creation of an inclusive environment inside the organization. Implementing of these requires hard work and the ability to see the restaurant from the bottom-up. Bottom-up strategies is more process focused. It focuses more on an individual. To identify that every person is different and it can happen only one person at a time. Hence different learning solutions and strategies have to be made as per each individual. Most often it is the responsibility of the top management during an issue or problem but in bottom-up approach its the responsibility of each individual (Winters, 2010). In a zero tolerance policy the employees will hesitate to say anything thinking they might get fired but in a bottom-up approach it is a natural work team where there is more of learning in order to understand better and hence helps the team to perform more effectively. By using the bottom-up approach every leader right from the team leader to the top position all are teachers. Through their own behavior they project themselves as thought leaders or primary teachers. Top-down approach is more for the office while the bottom-down is more for the team. Everybody has a say in the organization hence more chance of improving the restaurant (Winters, 2010). Due to all these above reasons the restaurant has to balance the two approaches and not follow just one. From the study on Masala restaurant it is found that the restaurant does not have a balance between the two approaches. In order to make this a success every member should get involved in the restaurant. If the restaurant uses only the top-down then there are chances of the diversity initiative stopping in the middle or even before it starts. By the time the messages or information reaches the lower level it could have changed, issues misunderstood and an important goal or strategy may reach in the end as a mere thought. In such a case the restaurant will lose time and money of all those who are involved. Work teams and group dynamics The work environment in the restaurant is a bit relaxed and everything depends on the line manager who is currently responsible for everything. There are two types of managers: those who exercise their power and show their leadership qualities obtained through experience and the other type are those who in order to get their team work done will take everything upon themselves and do most of the team members tasks. In most cases the managers tend to be calm and are indistinguishable from other employees. Team work is categorized based on different field of specialization. Some are appointed according to different experience and some as per the requirement. The manager creates a team and defines their roles and responsibilities. They focus on what they have to deliver and what their final destination is. Every team has a team leader, who always creates or subdivides task for the team and manage his/her group members in helping them achieve their goal and create doorways by motivating them to get them to better success which will help in their promotion path. The processes which have to be followed by an organization to ensure productive team performance are: By developing goals and plans for everyday use. Enhance communication among every member in the team Decision making and solving problems Building and maintaining positive relationships with crews. Resolve conflicts. Managers always initiate the task, whatever the task may be. The first step is taken by the manager and he decides the allocation of teams and schedules. General Manager has the superior authority because Manager reports to the General manager and he given all the ideas about task maintenance and role performance, Once he allocates them then manager has the authority to distribute it. There are several ways to get the team output but generally the Masala restaurant use audit tools to see the performance parameter and get the team resolutions. Stakeholder communication A stakeholder is any individual or organization whoever is affected by the businesss activities. They can be directly or indirectly be interested in the company. They can be in contact with the company on daily basis or on certain occasions. It can be the owners, the employee, the customers, the suppliers, the marketers or the advertisers and more. Every stakeholders priorities are different. The owners want good profit and sell quality food at cheap prices. For the suppliers it is to supply good quality ingredients and other necessities at competitive price to the restaurant and as well make good profit. For the customers it is good and tasty food at cheap price. For the marketers and advertisers it is profit. For the employees it is a totally different reason a good salary, regular pay hike and scope for growth within the restaurant. Health inspectors too are stakeholders as their analysis result and certification is what builds up the confidence in the customers mind that the place they are eating in is as per the quality standards and hygiene. There are various such stakeholders as mentioned above who are directly or indirectly linked by the activities of the restaurant, but out of all these the most important one is the customer. The running of the business and its profits depends on the customers. Organization culture employee obligations The culture and ambience in the restaurant is very friendly. The manager and its team of employees are very happy and satisfied working in the restaurant. They are content with their own responsibilities but it is not helping the restaurant. The manager being at the higher level is in a position to exercise his power, take decisions and act accordingly. When there are new employees who are in the learning process, the manager usually takes charge. He patiently does the work of the employees whenever required. He sometimes deals with customers till the employees learn. In most companies the managers use various approaches to sell their products and give utmost customer satisfaction. It is the role of the manager to be able to take orders, feedback and other alternatives in order to make their decision, not just to give orders. The more a manager is close to the team the better are the results at later stages of development and the employees become comfortable to go beyond the actual r ole activities. (Northhouse, 2007). Communication Technologies and tools Effective communication is required for any business to function properly. If workers dont communicate with one another the business cannot go a long way. This could result in the form of missed or wrong deliveries, mix up of food and customer specification. Nowadays companies use sharepoint, intranet sites, instant messaging and email. Intranet sites are helpful for small businesses to update or keep their employees in the track of communicating new information. The workers can add about business wins, post job opportunities and sometimes put up periodic surveys (Conrad, 2012). The most important and valuable form of communication among businesses is instant messaging. This has become more superior then email. The managers and supervisors can keep a check on their workers such as if they have signed in and if they are at their desks or work. The answers for the business are also very instant and quick compared to emails. However emails are still effective and widely used, especially if it is one to one communication. Through online marketing the businesses can also let visitors and others outside New Zealand to know about their restaurant and can give them international offers. Conclusion Masala restaurant is a small and growing business in New Zealand. The restaurant has a good and tasty menu catering to people from various countries with their various foods. In the beginning the restaurant was open only during the weekends but now is open seven days a week and have customers throughout the week. After introducing the bar section there has been more people visiting the restaurant. The restaurant is a medium scale restaurant and the food is affordable by all, but the staff appointed are not very educated and do not come from the food industry. There are no growth opportunities in the restaurant for the educated people hence those with no experience and required qualifications do not join the restaurant. The manager is the one leading the whole show. If the people appointed are from the industry and have certain knowledge of the food industry, it will help reduce the burden on the manager and make it easier to deal with the customers. The workers will not approach the manager for everything and will be able to decide and sort out things in a better way. The restaurant has a huge scope and potential to grow if there are more investors and the business moves away from being a sole proprietorship. Opening of franchises will help the restaurant to grow and reach a large number of people. Introduction of recipes using seasonal foods too will be an added advantage. An in-house training if provided will give the workers scope for a better future and hence people from the industry would think of joining the restaurant. From the field study done it has been observed that there needs to be a change in the companys values and objectives. A change in the work culture will greatly help the restaurant in future growth. Recommendations Organization structure and communication Channels On doing the research I found that there is still scope for the restaurant to perform much better in future. I would like to recommend that the managers can make the employees perform and enjoy their work if there are many activities involving both the management and the employees. This way the employees will be freer to convey better and give customers feedback to the restaurant. The managers constant support does not get the utmost from the employees. The manager for better performance of his team puts more effort where the employees are not doing a committed or serious work. Communication Technologies and tools Masala restaurant does not have a proper website. There is a need to have a new website with constant updating. They can send emails to customers informing them of latest offers and new additions to the menu. They can also market through social websites like facebook and other networks. Apart from all these they can also advertise in papers or through pamphlets and flyers. The restaurant can go global and also open more franchises. Each branch can be owned independently. This way the restaurant can grow. They need to install new machinery like latest baking machines and upgrade as high tech as possible taking care of the financial aspect. By developing their website they can also introduce door delivery and undertake small contracts such as birthday parties and social get together. Work teams and group dynamics The environment has to be friendlier and knowledge based, so that the team works well and communicates effectively among themselves. Sometimes there are issues where one employee does not tell the other employee what feedback a customer has given. It is very important in the food industry to know the tastes, likes and wants of the customers. Every conversation is an important feedback to better the restaurant. The food has too much sweetness, which is not liked by many Asians. Care should be taken on this. Handling of the bar too requires attention. Staff needs to be trained. Most of the employees are Indians it will help if they have a few locals or a multi-cultured environment. This will bring diverse customers through the employees too. To motivate the employees they can introduce rewards like incentives, food coupons, free weekend trip. This is the way to keep the entire employee up to date and attentive. There is another way to create Employee of the month and team of the month in the restaurant. Stakeholder Communication Stakeholders involvement is very important. The restaurant is not very involved or interested in communicating with their suppliers. Regular meetings with them will give better feedback. Discounts on certain days kept aside for the family and friends of suppliers and the employees will bring in more people. Stakeholders are the fastest mode of communication. By Word-of-mouth more people are likely to visit the restaurant as it builds confidence in new visitors who are trying the restaurant for the first time. Apart from profits other goals like quality and hygiene are to be taken care of too. Following the above recommendations will help Masala restaurant to reap better profits and expand their branches. Better strategies and company policies involving the recommendations will also to a certain extent bring down the issues faced in the restaurant and develop an interest among the employees to learn new things. Apart from that there is scope for the employees to grow. Value to the Organization This business report is really helpful to the organization because in this I worked out on the various issues related to the communication have some points which can be helpful to the organization with the help of the report they can improve their communication process or they also come to know about the problem at their communication system. In my report I also recommend some ideas, which I learn during my study. According to me, it will give some more benefits and clear communication system. During my report I found many things, like masala restaurant have their 8 branches all over the new Zealand, It is family owned business, now the owner of masala is jyoti jain. She looks after all the branches. My report helps them in many ways because I analyze all the categories and provide the best recommendations. If they use that ideas it may help them to become a challenger to their competitors. So according to me they make a specific person or way to convey the messages or communication. Email, video calling is good example for clear communication. It helps the organizations into many ways

No Exit: An Existentialist Play by Jean-Paul Sartre

Jean-Paul Sartre portrays existentialism in his play, No Exit, through his three main characters: Inez, who was put in Hell for causing pain to the people who loved her, and is punished by loving someone who refuses to love her back, this in turn causes her pain; Garcin ,who was put in Hell partially for being unkind and unfaithful to his wife and partially for being a coward, is punished by Estelle’s love and his inability to escape cowardice; and lastly Estelle, who was put in Hell for her vanity must receive love where she doesn’t want it and not receive love where she does want it.Existentialism is: a part of moral thinking that is subjective to your individual experiences in the hostile universe and that humankind lacks faith and purpose in the world and that humans can do what they want, when they want, as long as they take responsibility for their actions. Inez Serrano describes herself as â€Å"what some people down there called ‘a damned bitch’â⠂¬ (pg. 25). Out of No Exit’s three main characters Inez seems to be the one who embraces the fact that they are all in Hell the most. She openly acknowledges that she has done something wrong in her life and that she believes that Garcin and Estelle have also done something wrong. Shortly after meeting Estelle and Garcin Inez tells them, â€Å"Yes, we are criminals – murderers – all three of us. We’re in hell my pets: they never make mistakes, and people aren’t damned for nothing. † (pg. 16) She believes that they are all â€Å"damned souls† and now they have to â€Å"pay the reckoning†. Inez seems not only to embrace the fact that they are in Hell more fully than her two companions, but also to embrace existentialism more than they do.She tells them that â€Å"each of Piccione 2 us will act as torturer of the two others. † (pg. 17) Inez seems to realize that she has done something wrong and that she will have to take responsibility for her actions. During Inez’s lifetime she was cold and cruel. She sucked the living out of the people who loved her. Inez believes she is in Hell because she seduced her cousin’s wife. As a result her cousin died; whether it was an accident or he killed himself seems remotely unclear. When Inez had Florence (her cousin’s wife) all to herself she claims that she used to remind Florence everyday â€Å"we killed him between us. (pg, 26) Inez tells us that she was so cruel that she couldn’t live â€Å"without making people suffer†. (pg. 26) Inez compares herself to â€Å"a live coal in others’ hearts. † (pg. 26) She tells us that she â€Å"flamed away in [Florence’s] heart, till there was nothing but a cinder. One night she got up and turned on the gas while I was asleep. Then she crept back into bed. † (pg. 26) This is how Inez died. Inez says that she does not regret doing what she did, although she does seem to know that it is the reason she is in Hell. During her lifetime Inez caused pain to those who loved her; consequently she is now pained by the one she loves. In Hell Inez loves Estelle. Estelle, however, does not love Inez back. This in itself would be painful for Inez, but to make it even worse Estelle fawns over Garcin, begging him to love her. Inez is aware that Estelle is in love with Garcin. She tells him â€Å"You’ve taken her from me†, â€Å"even if I didn’t see her I’d feel it in my bones – that she was making every sound, every rustle of her dress, for your benefit, throwing you smiles you didn’t see†¦. Well, I won’t stand for that. I prefer to choose my hell; I prefer to look you in the eye and fight it out face to face. † (pg. 2-23) Inez, most likely, knows that she will never succeed in the fight for Estelle’s heart. She knows that Garcin and Estelle are here with her to cause her pain, but she cho oses to fight anyway. While Inez is undeniably punished for her choices during her lifetime Piccione 3 in Hell she was also punished for them on Earth. It is said that every action has a reaction. Inez’s â€Å"action†, so to speak, was her cruelty towards Florence. The reaction in this scenario was that she caused Florence to kill not only herself, but also Inez. Inez died because of how she treated Florence, and now she is in Hell because of it.Joseph Garcin describes himself as a â€Å"well-beloved brute. † (pg. 25) Garcin, as he calls himself, doesn’t seem to comprehend death and Hell nearly as well as Inez. Nor does he understand existentialism as well as she does, although he does understand it to an extent. When Garcin first arrives in Hell he asks where things like his toothbrush and toiletries are. This proves that he does not fully grasp the concept of actually being dead and being in Hell. He attempts to play it off, deny that they should be eac h other’s torturers. He attempts to portray himself as a hero. However once Garcin realizes that he is in Hell and can’t escape it he seems to know why. He also seems to realize, eventually, that they will inevitably be the others’ torturers. He says, â€Å"We’re chasing after each other, round and round in a vicious circle. †(pg. Garcin tells us that he is in hell because he â€Å"treated his wife abominably. † (pg. 24) However, I believe that this is not the only reason Garcin is in Hell. I think that his cowardice and the fact that he could never overcome it also put him in Hell. He would never admit it, but could also never escape it. Garcin, like Inez, tells us that â€Å"I don’t regret anything. (pg. 24) He continues to go on and say, â€Å"I must pay the price†. (pg. 24) From this quote we can assume that Garcin has come to accept that he is in Hell because of the way he treated his wife, and that he not only knows it, b ut realizes that he will have to be punished for it. But he never does admit to his cowardice. He tells us that he was a coward. This haunts him. He had given himself an ultimatum during his life time: face death with courage, and he would be no coward, or face Piccione 4 death miserably and he would always feel like a coward. Now even with death he can’t escape this.It shouldn’t matter that he didn’t face his death courageously because there is nothing he can do to change that now, but it still bothers him to no end. Garcin is punished for each of his wrong doings. Firstly he is punished for treating his wife badly by her never crying. As much as he thought she should cry and she should scream she never did. This frustrated Garcin. He hated her big, sad, accusing eyes that never shed a tear. Even in death he sees her and immediately is annoyed by those eyes. In Hell he is also punished for his unfaithfulness. He no longer needs to cheat on his wife for the sake of hurting her, she wouldn’t ever know. Now that he has no motivation to be with another woman he has another woman, Estelle, throwing herself at him. Garcin is also punished for his cowardice. Since he could never accept that he was a coward, nor could he ever truly deny that he was a coward, for he knew he was, but wished he wasn’t, he must now he needs someone to tell him he is not a coward. Estelle wants to tell Garcin what he wants to hear, but Inez is there, in the background, telling Garcin that she doesn’t care if he is a coward and that she is just telling him what he wants to hear without really meaning it.Estelle admits to him that she doesn’t care if he is a coward or not and he can’t bear it. He tries to leave, but when the door opens he realizes he won’t leave. Garcin wishes to convince Inez that he is not a coward, and will stay until he can do so. The day Garcin convinces Inez he is not a coward will be the day Garcin convinc es himself he is not a coward, but that day will never come. The last of the three characters is Estelle. Estelle is a high society lady from Paris. She doesn’t grasp that she is in Hell, nor does she grasp what it means. When Estelle first arrives in Hell she seems to think it’s just like any other hotel she’s been to, telling the valet she will call Piccione 5 him when she needs him, not realizing that she is being punished and no one will be trying to make her comfortable and happy. Estelle does not seem to grasp existentialism. She does not seem to be willing to admit that she has done something wrong in her life. When she first sees Garcin she believes that he is someone else who she knew during her lifetime. We later find out that she thought he was her lover. She believes that he will have no face, and that he was playing â€Å"a rather nasty trick† on her. When Estelle is asked what she did wrong, and why she is in Hell she completely denies knowing why. Estelle later reveals that she had a lover, the man who she expected Garcin was, and that they had a child together. She tells us that she didn’t want the child and once it was born she killed it. Her lover on the other hand did want the child. Once the child was dead and they had parted their ways her lover killed himself. Although Estelle does not admit to feeling guilty or remorse about this she does. Estelle is also vain. She married for money, and seems to disregard those who don’t have the wealth or status that she did. She needs to look good and for everything around her to cater to her. Estelle is punished vanity. Because Estelle is vain it bothers her that the furniture does not match her outfit. Estelle also can’t stand not knowing how she looks. She needs a mirror, therefore there are none, to touch up her make up and make her feel beautiful; even to know that she exists. Estelle is also punished for not accepting love. Because Estelle was vain s he couldn’t bear the thought of having a child and ruining her life and her image.Having a child with a man that wasn’t her husband would undoubtedly make her look bad. It is said that a mother loves its child unconditionally, and that child will love its mother back. You don’t choose to love your parents; you just do for the sole reason that they are your parents. When Estelle killed her baby Piccione 6 she was denying herself the love of the one person who would truly love her no matter what. Now that she is in Hell she is punished by having one person there who truly loves her, and sees no wrong in her. This person is Inez. Consequently Estelle will never love Inez. She doesn’t approve of her because she was a post office clerk and not a high society person. Also Estelle will never love Inez because she believes she needs a man to complete her. On the contrary Inez is homosexual. When Estelle killed her baby her lover ended up killing himself.
